Robert Patton, a seasoned farmer from Ballycarry, Northern Ireland, has made a significant shift from beef to dairy farming with a £1 million investment. His new dairy unit, Old Mill Dairies, reflects cutting-edge technology and a strong focus on animal welfare.

The facility also includes a robotic feeding system, an out-of-parlour feeder, and a barn cleaner to minimize labor requirements.

Robert emphasized creating a comfortable environment for the cows, including transparent roof sheeting to maximize natural light. This approach not only enhances cow welfare but also reduces heat stress and improves overall productivity. The cows, primarily Holsteins, have adapted quickly to the new system, demonstrating a smooth transition to robotic milking.

The dairy unit incorporates several advanced technologies and safety features. Two large silos (130ft by 35ft) store silage, and a slurry bubbler system helps manage gas buildup. Special attention was given to details such as grooved slats for better traction and high-quality feed locking gates from France. McKinty Construction handled the building, ensuring a well-designed and functional facility.

Milk Production and Operations
Currently, the farm milks 90 cows, with plans to increase the number to 130. The cows are producing an average of 35kg of milk per day, which is sold to Aurivo in the Republic of Ireland. Robert has streamlined operations with the help of one staff member and utilizes artificial insemination (AI) to breed new heifers.
